So, one of the things that I really have in trouble understanding is that how jazz music developed to be so different from any(many) other kinds of music. My class notes are terrible.

Well, what can't you understand from your notes.

Um, one thing is I cupped it(copy) down musical training from the blackboard. what's the meaning(What did it mean) by that.

Well, most people who become professional musicians have had some kind of formal training in music but the first people who play Jazz is kind of(had almost) none.

Ok, but so what? Doesn’t that(it) just mean that they were not very good musicians?

No(Well), it's not that the early jazz musicians weren't good, it just (it’s they that) play their instrument differently. Let's see(say) you are receiving formal instruction in the instrument(trumpet喇叭). First you'd learn the right way players now (to place your mouth) and right way of (to use your) fingers ant right way the (to) blow air, and then you will practice the single notes and different compenation(combination) of notes until you could do those correctly and only after that would(which) your teacher will give you a piece of music to play.

And the early jazz musicians didn’t learn to play this way?

No, the first people who play jazz music learn to play the(their) instrument by actually trying to play a song they like. They would(were) hearmarity(humanity) and tried to play themselves from(on their) instruments. Because they were mostly teaching themselves, they began to express themselves on the(in) ways that formally traditionally trained the musicians didn’t. In traditional instruction that(there’s) one correct way to play something and everyone who plays try to make the correct sound, but in jazz

In jazz music, there isn't one right way to play. In fact, individual musicians are supposed to inter(interpret) the music the(in their) own style. So you say(are saying) that this ask(aspect方面) of jazz developed because the first people who play jazz didn't have any formal music training?

Well, that's the part of it but any(there is)0 Z; o- @+ r1 V
more. What else do you have in your notes?

To continue our study of jazz, today we will focus on the blues and listen to some recordings by Bethy(Bessie) Smith ,who is considered by many to be the greatest of all jazz singers. The blues developed in the southern United States from music by(of) black people who were brought from Africa and first(force to) work as slaves on southern plantations(农场,种植园). The earliest form of blues were the work songs in few holors(and field howlers咆哮者)

Jazz creates(greats) like Louis as strong envatual handson(Armstrong and Francis Andersen) a company of(accompanied Bessie Smith) in her recordings. The evelop(example) of blues we will hear today is the issue(reissue重新发行) from best of (of some of Bessie Smith in) her classic recordings. They(these) songs are found on(from) late 1920’s when she was on(at) the peak of her career. It’s no wonder she was known as the empel(emperor皇帝,君王) the blues. She made 160 recordings and was also a thought as life(a sort after live) performer in New York, Boston and Chicago as well as the larger cities in the south. Good morning, today we are going to learn a little more about that great musical tradition called the blues. And in just a minute, we will get to hear the voice of a great blues performer, one of kinds of (mile time famous)7 B. @0 r5 u/ J! w7 Z
singers and that’s Bessie Smith. First though(of all), let me tell you a little about her. Bessie Smith grew up in the south of Tennecy(Tennessee), and while she was still a teenager, she started touring the country with other black performers, and making it(a) name for herself. By 1923, she was making records for a major recording studio and selling hundreds of thousands of copies, and soon, she was singing as sold-well(out) performances in(at) theaters that(in) city after city repute(with huge) over slow(overflow) crowds outside, often sailing(filling with) the street some(and) blocking the traffic. It was really something. A couple of years later, she and the Great Louis Armstrong made an unforgettable recording of the see(St. Louis) blues, And few years after that, St. Louis
+ z% g, _" f; ~2 y, q3 |/ sblues was also the name of Bessie Smith's only movie. One of the very early pocking(talking) pictures. Try to see it some time if you can. From then up until her

death, Bessie Smith kept on writing and recording songs and singing the blues and (in) concerts all over the country, all together she made 160 records. We are going to play one of them now and as we do, please listen to the passion of that wonderful deep voice of hers. I think you will be able to understand why Louis Armstrong set of (said) Bessie Smith: she has music in her soul
