shelf in woodworking class, I thrived on the challenges of precise and metic

% ~% k/ w, a4 M; But it was not until I read about late-breaking discoveries and research in t - K+ g+ ?: p0 V
he field of genetics that my interests in science intensified. When I entere ! @  d) V2 Q4 p* Z4 L
d the University of British Columbia (UBC), I naturally chose to specialize 5 ?; \/ J  A+ G5 |/ j" a
in Cell Biology and Genetics. In my sophomore year at UBC, I first began to
+ E8 I; M  r: v' {. R6 gseriously consider dentistry as a career. At that time, I began to appreciat 1 T1 ]' J- ]( G- {, ^- {, M* X, n* s
e the important role that dentistry played in my life. Four years earlier, I
5 x8 w) U2 t! v9 m- Obegan an orthodontic treatment program with Dr. Junni Wang to correct a sev
* ~' F  c1 l6 X1 d( }( B1 W7 Gere crowding problem with my teeth. Both before and during the treatment, I
7 o9 P' N' A* Jwas a most reluctant participant; not many teenagers look forward to braces
. L( e& l  P* [% v* rfilling their mouth during their last two years of high school, and I was no
9 D9 `0 y$ y, r3 H/ e2 n2 cdifferent. However, at every monthly check-up for three-and-a-half years th
" f  L4 g1 v, a5 i2 M7 o6 Ke office staff had nothing but kind words of encouragement and optimism. Now
0 {  h! ^9 ~' Yafter the completion of the treatment I had reason to smile. Dr. Wang helpe

% M# A- S* j2 h( O" f+ Q( Xg young man. His skills not only brought back my smile, but also my sense of

" c7 L: |: ]* [9 ~t. After this preliminary 憄atient-doctor?exposure to dentistry, I substanti   s( Y& t" ^1 S; A7 K: D  Q4 q
ally increased my involvement in the field to determine if dentistry really 3 n. O! w6 a6 c5 {$ C' N' h
was for me. My participation with the UBC Pre-Dental Society allowed me to c " q% |9 Q; E. R0 y
ommunicate with various professionals in the field. I also investigated oppo * x& M; u% j/ W' f; M
rtunities to volunteer in the University Dental Clinic or participate in res & Q$ P6 Z0 V) t; }
earch work. After speaking to a couple of professors in the UBC Faculty of D $ d9 n: p, D6 S
entistry asking them about research opportunities, I found a topic that inte
0 d# [  i0 t3 D9 ^- l9 vrested me. Dr. Putnins, of the Division of Periodontics, offered me a positi
+ x7 C. T0 E8 L! Y2 Oon in his lab to conduct a semi-quantitative analysis to determine the level : s6 ~: f' @" M% F2 B
s of endotoxin in dental unit water lines. After taking many water samples f
. w$ s* c6 Q2 A# Z4 p( zrom the University Dental Clinic and quantifying the amounts of endotoxin (l 7 I; z4 O" p. [/ b3 L. f
ipopolysaccahride) in those samples with an Limulus Abeocyte Lysate test, I 0 d$ C6 \! p8 _  i4 c6 g1 F
prepared to publish dentistry抯 first account of this type of experiment. I
/ j$ a; I. x6 n* `/ Uconducted the study over a 16-week span (Jan.-Apr.?8), and the research work
+ D" q8 N1 t$ fcounted as 3.0 credits towards my undergraduate degree. Because the vast ma 6 Z% b/ z9 m+ X- J5 B
jority of my work was self-directed, I submitted my findings for evaluation , V0 q5 c: ~: _# K! e: l
by the faculty in a 32-page report with 46 references, and I also defended m
% g$ @: }) Y& N7 n+ I. ly methods before a panel of professors. Impressed by the findings and result
7 l$ p  O; E+ h1 D# \s, Dr. Putnins will use my study as a key component of a journal article he * |* U5 m/ F0 u0 F, e6 C% _; d
is currently preparing for the Journal of Dental Research (JDR). The school
* C- ]; w0 V3 r* E; w8 walso submitted an abstract of my findings for presentation at the upcoming 7 + ^1 x" W0 C' G# j/ |3 ~' u7 t3 Z
7th General Session of the International Association of Dental Research (IDA 1 `( I4 J6 C9 P+ \' A) q0 h
R) to be held at Vancouver, Canada. I am keenly looking forward to this uniq . ]. X9 y5 }3 l+ U  Q4 R

helped me develop qualities I can usefully apply to dentistry. As a Customs
+ ^/ G% L' |) a6 @: _8 @0 eInspector, I had the opportunity to communicate effectively with many diffe # B) C' C9 C$ f( l- `2 R
rent types of people in various situations. I have also developed the abilit 1 j7 I7 l, L8 W+ E
y to resolve conflicts, defuse difficult situations, and show empathy even d
3 k1 K/ V3 V" {$ ]& l3 s, Iuring cases of enforcement. In addition, my experience with team sports has * R1 W% Q% j# V5 C4 q
