Could we stop for a few minutes before we go over chapter fiveI’m gonna need extra emerge to get through that one.+ Q3 x$ d0 z, O% M
Why? The first four chapters went really fast.
0 Y. ^6 K6 N5 sI know, but the professor said the text would go up to chapter five. And that’s the one I understand least. My notes from that day are a mess, circles made of broken lines, the word”GESTALT” in big letters, complete confusion. , j1 w3 K" `8 F7 f; \! C3 j- U- b& S
Ok, well, let’s start with broken lines. There suppose to be an illustration of the principle(首要的) of closure(关闭). The idea is that your brain doesn’t take in information exactly the same way as your eyes see it. I mean it’s not like your eyes are camera and your brain just see the photographs it takes. The point is that your brain perceives(察觉)more than your eyes actually see. Imaging individual broken lines and the shape of the circle, your brain perceives them to be a circle, even though the shape isn’t complete. Your brain fills in the empty spaces because what it sees is familiar to a complete pattern.1 Y- S% Y+ @" F/ V2 r& R
Oh, I get it. Our brain’s close is based in the circle-closure, so is closure the same things as?
! N7 s4 Y* C: Z2 ]' a$ hWell, the closure is the part of GESTALT. It’s one of the five principles that try to explain how the brain organizes the information it perceives.
7 C; X- q- h' l+ A, }0 g) M. ~2 NHem, do your think that the other four principles would be on the text.
  }" \, @3 |) s% z7 }1 c! _Probably seems they are all in chapter five. We’d better go over all of them.9 R7 O% Q% O$ o; j2 W9 P5 l( Q
Yeah, I’m sure you are right. But let’s go and get something to eat before we do the text, ok? . {3 S$ C' N+ O6 s# z3 v
Otherwise, I don’t think my brain will be able to perceive anything.
4 ^% [0 Z1 k8 VSure, let’s go.

Don’t bet on it. I’ve never cared much about rocks.: `$ N, S! K- e% W3 y1 W
But you do care about dinosaurs(恐龙) I recall and today we discuss the geological evidence about what may have
2 F3 V$ Y6 T6 h1 Z+ t+ Z0 {8 skilled off(
灭绝) the dinosaurs at least here in north America. 3 D: ~1 ^. ?3 R9 U
Oh, sure. They got hit(击中) by a comet(彗星) or something. I think.( i- `9 i* [( S
Yeah, about 60 million years ago, a huge comet did crash in to earth down in Mexico and it plowed out as an enormous(巨大的) crater(坑) over a hundred miles across.
2 D- u; `* y0 q! C, gAnd that’s what why death the dinosaurs, right?
$ @) K" G- M' ~, I% BWell, it wasn’t exactly the impact itself but what happed right afterward. You see researchers figured out (推测)from the shape of the crater that the comet must be coming in pretty low across the Atlantic and so right after the impact a huge cloud of fire river must have swept clear across the north America, all in just a few minutes. And that what probably kill off not just the dinosaurs but a lot of different species of plants and animals.
# J. ~. g8 y- H) W# v/ `- Y' AAmazing.- u. f, L$ {# c1 Y3 ?! F3 n
Yeah, and even 2000 miles from the impact, plants would have been burst in the flames.( h- r% l3 \0 z" C

Well, above ground anyway.
- w, ?8 Y% G- q6 B7 W3 R( k! cAbove ground? Say. I wonder if it that explain why the dinosaurs all disappeared but some other animals, like maybe small mammals living underground managed to survive.
& [& ]. Q& ?$ M, w" s. UMake sense. Anyhow later on the tons of dusts that thrown away out into the atmosphere have caused some global climate change. So eventually the comet probably affected plants and animals species all around the world, but nowhere as much as North America.% L. z0 {' A# ~' b1 A/ M

9 A, b' e. U! P7 r& C' M; _2.
7 _+ y% c& Q6 G) ?* G3 y7 FWe’ve been talking about some of the affects that the human beings so act on the earth. One that you may not be aware of is' z( S' ]2 T; F/ t  s
that we’ve actually begun to change the length of the day. The other we say that one day is the amount of time the earth need to spend completely around on axis
(地轴). And the imagery line runs through the center of the earth from north to south. And of course there are a lot of physical causes that can3 I4 D+ c8 K9 P( d, d2 C4 h( F
affect the spin
(自转) of the earth rotation (自转)but there are only one that direct result of the human activity. Since 1950, human beings have built about ten thousand artificial reservoirs(人工水库) all over the world. There reservoirs have redistributed(再分配) tremendous amount of the earth water. When they are use to be in the area near the equator(赤道) and the imagery line(意向线); E8 ~7 u$ a/ U1 v6 u
on surround the middle of the earth is now the reservoirs in the areas of different latitudes
(纬). The latitude matters because, well, think of the earth and its axis, the equator contains the areas on the earth that are the farther way from axis. So water has been redistributed
9 I. e8 o+ P+ w2 z# L% \! |. bfrom the equator reasons, then wherever the water is, to it’s close to the earth axis. It’s like when ice skaters perform spins when those skaters out their arms enclose to their bodies they spin faster. So the earth is spinning faster because the reservoirs have redistributed the water close to its axis. And because the earth is spinning faster, since 1950 the length of day has decreased by about 8 millionth of a second. I know that doesn’t sound like much but significant in that this is the first time that human beings ever had miserable affect on the earth motion.
