OK. Another ancient Greek philosopher (这词该听得出来) we need to discuss is Aristotle (陌生啊) - Aristotle ethical theory (反复听). What else Aristotle’s ethical theory is all about is this (指代下文): he is trying to show you how to be happy - what true happy is.
% q8 Z. {9 Y* {  K+ o; [Now, why is he interested in human happiness? It is not just because that it is something that all people want or aim for. It is more than that. But to get there we need to first make a very important distinction. Let me introduce a couple of technical terms: extrinsic value and intrinsic value. (陌生啊)+ v4 _% }/ I$ Y& `# S
To understand Aristotle’s interest in happiness, you need to understand the distinction.
& y; i) G: x9 v, e1 k' }Something we aim for or value, not for themselves but for what they bring about in addition to themselves. If I value something is a means to something else, then it has what (/t/失爆) we will call “extrinsic value”. Other things we desire and hold to be valuable for themselves alone. If we value something not as (没听出来,到现在为止) a means for something else but for its own sake, let us say that it has a “intrinsic value”. ( y9 Y1 m% |: y, ]8 W
Exercise. There may be some people who value exercise for itself (/t/失爆) , but I do not. I value exercise because if I exercise I tend to stay healthier than I would if I did not. So I desire to engage (陌生啊) in exercise and I value exercise extrinsically... not for its own (快啊) sake, but as a means to something beyond it. (连读) It brings me good health. 1 G7 L4 k8 t) D1 `
Health. Why do I value good health? Well, here it gets a little more complicated for me. Um, health is important for me because I can not... do other things I want to do – play music, teach philosophy - if I am ill. So health (才不是how it) is important to me - has value to me - as a means to a productive (才不是product of) life. But health is also important to me because I just kind of like (陌生啊) to be healthy: _. J) b/ k  X# k" ?4 w8 G
- it feels good. It is pleasant to be healthy, unpleasant not to be. So to some degree I value health both for itself and as a means to something else: productivity. It has got extrinsic and intrinsic value for me.
; Z. G( m4 ]+ s4 |4 c$ T; u; J
Then there are some things that are just valued for themselves. I am musician, not a professional musician; I just play a musical instrument for fun. Why do I value playing music? Well, like most amateur musicians, I only play because, well, I just enjoy it. It is something that’s an end in itself. (intrinsic value 的同义)! V$ {4 \6 J' x6 h& y
Now, something else I value is teaching. Why? Well, it bring in a modest (才不是mount of) income but I could make more money doing other things. I would do it even if they did not pay me. I just enjoy teaching. In that sense it’s an end to itself. (陌生啊)
' s" f7 ^3 k' q- HBut teaching is not something that has intrinsic value for all people - and that’s true generally. Most things that are enjoyed in and of themselves vary from person to person. Some people value teaching intrinsically, but others do not. So how does all this (快啊) relate to human happiness? Well, Aristotle asks (人名总是被忽略): is there something that all human being value... and value only intrinsically, for its own sake and only for its own sake. If you could just find such a (才不是that) thing, that would be the universal final good, or (才不是all) truly the ultimate (才不是automatic) purpose or goal (没听到) for all human beings. Aristotle thought the answer was yes. What is it? Happiness. Everyone will agree, he argues, that happiness is the ultimate end to be valued for itself and really only for itself. For what other purpose is there in being happy? What does it yield? (陌生啊) The attainment of (陌生啊) happiness becomes the ultimate or highest good (快啊) for Aristotle.
$ X* Z9 s1 ~/ g! F: k4 u. z/ ?The next question that Aristotle raises (陌生啊) is: what is happiness? We all want it; we all desire it; we all seek it. It is the goal we have in (才不是on) life, But what is it? How do we find it? Here he notes (才不是knows), with some frustration (陌生啊), people disagree.
2 `8 y2 _8 s& yBut he does give us a couple of criteria, or features (陌生啊), to keep in mind as we look for what true human happiness is. True happiness should be, as he puts in it,(快啊) complete. Complete in that (快啊) it is all we require. Well, true human happiness... if you had that, what else you need? Nothing.  h8 t, O8 Q2 B; n1 f7 C  s
And, second, true happiness should be something that I can obtain on my own. I should not have to rely on other people for it. Many people value fame and seek fame. (才不是fun) Fame for them becomes the goal. But, according to Aristotle (又是你), this won’t work either, because fame depends altogether too much on other people. I can not get it on my own, without help from other people.
' |* d2 B2 s3 x9 TIn the end, Aristotle says that true happiness is the exercise of reason – a life of intellectual contemplation (陌生啊) ... of thinking. So let’s see how he (才不是it)comes to that./ m8 r8 _# a* }2 @) r& i. H
