5 S0 ^. w1 B6 U) s0 ^' d2 pA numble of sociologists(拼写错误) blame(blain) the automobile for the decline of the downtown areas of major cities. In the 1950's and 1960's the automobile made it possible to work in the city and yet lived in the suburbs(拼写错误) many miles away. Shopping patterns(拼写错误) changed: instead of patronizing(资助) downtown stores, people in the suburbs went to large shopping malls(购物商场) outside the city and closer(close) to home. Merchants in the city failed; and their stores closed. Downtown shopping areas became deserted(desert).' ^9 y2 \) S& l- a

; m' y' F7 p' w4 _- l8 o: VIn recent years there's been a rebirth of the downtown areas, as(听成there has) many suburbanites(不会拼,能从听力中猜出意思) have moved back to the city. They've done this, of course. to avoid highways clogged with commuters(通勤者,经常往返者) from the suburbs.

I've chosen(听成I’m choosing) this particular city planning problem --- our dependence on private transportation --- to discuss in groups. I'm hoping that you all will come up with some innovative solutions. Oh, and don't approach(approach) the problem from a purely sociological perspective; try to take into account in environmental(environment) and economic(economical) issues as well.

Wood was born in 1881 in Iowa farm country, and became interested in art very early in life. Although he studied art in both Minneapolis(M) and at the Art Institute(institued) of Chicago, the strongest influences on his art were European. He spent time in both Germany and France and his study there helped shape his own stylized(stylist) form of(from) realism.

(整个一句话听的很不清楚) His portraits of farm families imitate the static formalism of photographs of early settlers posed in front of their homes. His paintings of farmers at work, and of their tools and animals, demonstrate a serious respect for the life of the Midwestern(midwest) the United States. By the 1930’s, Wood was a leading figure of the school of art called “American regionalism

2 C/ f  l  U: P# HIn today's class we'll be examining some 19th century pattern books that were used for building houses. I think it's fair(fare) to say that these pattern books were(worth) the most important influence on the design of North(Northern) American houses during the 19th century.1 i# ]/ N2 }$ `# }6 r% W
0 U' }* ~) ?* U: H/ I
This was because most people who wanted to build a house couldn't afford to hire an architect(architect). Instead, they bought a pattern book, picked out(up) a plan, and took it to the builder(build). The difference in cost was substantial(听到了,但不会拼). In 1870, for example, hiring an architect would have(连读,漏听了) cost about a hundred dollars. At the same time, a pattern book written by an architect cost only 5 dollars.

At that price, it's easy to see why pattern books were so popular. Some are back in print(backing printed) again today, and of course they cost a lot more than they did a hundred years ago. But they(there) are an invaluable resource for(or) historians, and also for people who restore old houses. I have a modern reprint here that I will be passing that/ x1 M7 c  u) f8 p) _; H

Last week we talked about Anne Bradstreet and the role of women in the Puritan colonies(人名简写,中间的几个词没听出来). Today I want to talk about some other women who have contributed to American history, some are famous and some are not so famous. The first woman I would like to talk about is Molly Pitcher(MP). Those of you who are familiar with the name may know her as a hero of(in) the American Revolution. But, in fact, there never was a woman named Molly Pitcher(MP). Her real name was actually Mary Ludwig Hays(MLH). She got the(a) nickname Molly Pitcher for her acts of bravery(act bravely) during the Revolutionary War.

* d* j0 ]5 j8 x$ }! u8 |As the story goes, when Mary's, or Molly's husband, John Hays, enlisted in the artillery(炮兵的总称)(这句话的大致意思知道,但是单个单词没有听清), Mary followed, like many other wives(wifes) did. She helped out doing(during) washing and cooking for the soldiers(sodilers). She was known to be a pretty unusual woman, she smoked a pipe and chewed tobacco.! j% V. Z# D# J/ D8 k# p" `

Anyway, in the summer of 1778, at the Battle of Monmouth, it was a blistering(酷热的) hot day, maybe over a hundred degrees, and fifty soldiers died of thirst during the battle. Molly wasn't content to stay back at camp(and cample). Instead, she ran(run) through gunshots(gunshoots) and cannon fire carrying water in pitchers(大水罐) from a small stream out to the thirsty American soldiers. The relief that she(连读,没听出来) brought(brough) with her pitchers of water gave her the legendary(传奇) nickname Molly Pitcher. The story also says that she(连读,没听出来) continued to load and fire her husband's(husband) cannon after he was wounded. They say she was so well liked by the soldiers that they call her “sergeant(军士) Molly " In fact, legend has it that George Washington(GW) himself gave her the special military(military) title.5 ~9 V6 j$ p: k1 Y' r8 v
