Do you agree or disagree that progress is always good? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Identifying and solving problems to satisfy their own needs can be uniquely associated with human beings’ intelligence. Throughout history, people are always seeking progress in order to make a world that is more convenient and supportive for human beings. However, little do they expect that in this 21st century, what they did to improve the living have sometimes actually acted counteractively, causing more and more complexities and inconveniences, and even denying the true humanity within human beings.
People nowadays are enjoying the conveniences brought by cars, buses and other kinds of vehicles that can transfer them from one place to some other places hundreds of times faster than before. However, pollution caused by the vehicles is not so easy to get rid of or ignored. Studies have shown that the skies in cities are blocked (on average) one fifth of daytime solely by the wastes emitted by vehicles. People suffer from respirational diseases and even psychological problems because of the decreasing quality of the air. Moreover, factories also emitted waste gases to the air, contributing more to the seriousness of the problem. While the introduction of automobiles and industrialization may be perceived as two progresses, their by-products are more than difficult to be tolerated.
Pollution is, unfortunately, not the only problem forwarded by the constant progress. As mankind’s insatiable demands of getting everything work for them, they are actually denying the nature of human beings. Computerized systems have been created to write essays as students can do; automatic mah-jongg table have been invented to help people set up mah-jongg; even toilets have been designed to clean their buttoms automatically. It could be very ridiculous in the sense that people must depend on objects they have designed to do every single task in their lives. Individuality and creativity can easily be worn out by these advanced technologies.
It would be very sad for human beings one day to discover that their own inventions and efforts have been gradually making their life simpler, easier but worse and monotonous. Progress is not always good. Indeed, unwisely seeking progresses can be a mock on human’s intelligence.
