Do you agree or disagree with the following statement. For someone who wants to be successful in the society, knowledge gained from study is more important than the ability of being creative.
Being a modern man, one cannot deny the importance of both academic study as well as the ability of being creative. If knowledge is power, as Sir Francis Bacon said, then creativity can be perceived as the engine to make use of that power. Therefore, to be successful in today’s society, creativity is the key that really differs one person from others, sometimes even surpassing the importance of academic knowledge itself.
One may argue in favor of the superiority of knowledge itself over creativity by giving the simple reason that knowledge is the basis of every human imagination and creativity. However, the apparent solidity of this logic make people unable to separate facts from fiction; indeed, creativity is the source of most scientific research and discovery, leading to concepts and theories which later will be called “knowledge”. The whole logic is, at most times, the reverse from the popular thinking system.
When one looks into history, examples of great figures using creativity to develop their academic study are at hand. For instance, when Rutherford designed his experiment of shooting electronic beams into a gold metal sheet, he did not look into textbooks or reference materials to get the idea of the experiment. On the contrary, it was the combination of his creativity and the will of trying that had made him succeed and find out the inner structure of atoms. If one examines the lives of other great scientists, sociologists as well as philosophers, s/he will surely be surprised that when someone reaches a certain level in his/her specialized field, no more knowledge is even available. What is left for his/her is to use their creativity to advance the study by him/herself.
One can not only get a great deal from being creative at the summit of his/her study, but also during the process of getting knowledge. Creative methods for studying are more and more advocated by educational experts to help students with their studies. A student may not be efficient using the rote memorization skill when learning vocabulary, but s/he must be efficient when a new method is introduced, which helps them learn vocabulary by breaking the word into parts and memorizing the prefixes and suffixes. In this way, creativity again proves itself to be more important than passive acceptance of established knowledge.
Creativity is the source of enlightenment among people, making the world work in a way that is more efficient and productive. Although one should never abandon the basic academic studies, it is also of a big necessity for him/her to exercise his/her brain and get some ideas of creativity so as to be more successful in the society.
