希望大家给点很general的建议就行,我怕整体方向不对,呵呵,谢了
49 "Imaginative works such as novels, plays, films, fairy tales, and legends present a more accurate and meaningful picture of human experience than do factual accounts. Because the creators of fiction shape and focus reality rather than report on it literally, their creations have a more lasting significance."
The speaker makes a claim that imaginative workers have a more significance than factual accounts as to describe human experience. In my opinion, it is unfair to make this assertion. Both imaginative creations and factual accounts provide their own distinct function to help understand human experience; they are of equal significance.
I concede that imaginative works enable humans to rethink our behaviors and experiences from a culture dimension. They are didactic, that is, they teach us. Consider, for example, the Bergman’s films and comedies, in which he explored such difficult metaphysics: the existence of God, the loss of faith, the capacity for giving and receiving loves. All of these are significant issues in history of human beings, and through imaginative works, he reproduced the meaningful pictures of human experience in the unspoken and the delicately nuanced. Therefore, imaginative creations, based on the combination of both imagination and reality, provide people with a specific view of human experiences during the pursuit of civilization.
However, imaginative works, especially fairytales and legends, often use exaggerated techniques in shaping one figure. Consequently, it is often not so accurate to give an exact picture of human experience. For example, one of the folklores in ancient China, “butterfly lovers”, describes a tragic love story to satirize the tradition that no freedom of love is available! By the end of the legendary story, a beautiful butterfly, as the incarnation of Zhu Ying tai, flown out of her tomb after she carried suicide because she cannot live forever with her fiancé due to the objection of some governors. This scene cannot happen in the real world; thus, through a special way, it evokes Chinese long lasting desire to love with freedom. However, it exaggerates the misfortune of the pairs and in turn amplifies the misconducts of the governors, though it is a story never happened and the situation is not as so severe as described in it. Undoubtedly, as analyzed above, imaginative works are of less value than factual accounts from the view of accuracy.
By providing people with numerous amounts of history materials, humans are able to meditate and analyze human experience in an environment without any first-in impressions. Chairman Mao, an influential political leader, was praised for his contribution to the resistance against Japan and the founding of the People’s Republic, but also criticized by his mistakes in the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. If people only read the imaginative works in which Mao’s mistakes are ignored, it is hard for an individual to evaluate his life and contribution comprehensively because we are strongly impressed whatever he did is absolutely right. By analyzing the example, the importance of factual accounts can be easily understood; they ensure no misleading. Without them, we would never know what happened in the history and never get to know what we could absorb from our own mistakes occurred long before.
As a whole, both imaginative works and factual accounts are approachable means to explore human experience in the history. On one hand, as to imaginative creations, they are first the incarnations of art; they are full of various techniques, including exaggeration, to attract readers or watchers, and thereby the accuracy has declined. On the other hand, however, reading factual accounts seems to be monotonous, but it is humans need to study the history without being influenced by other opinions. In the study of human experience, imaginative workers emphasize its most influential and significant side while factual accounts supply with the whole.
In sum, it is not fair to ignore the importance of factual accounts because it is one of the two sides of a coin; it cannot be a coin without either of them. Imaginative works, and factual accounts, are supplementary methods of exploring the human experience and therefore, we cannot put each aside in order to pay more attention on another. However, some people are in favor of imaginative creations, for they are artistic and enjoyable; others pay more attention on factual accounts, for they are “the truth”, to some extent.
