W:I was talking before the (break) about (funding 基金,投资) in art in the United States about where the money comes from. I think some of you probably have questions. Yes, Tom.# N7 K/ a/ P; V, ?7 A' { K6 p
M:You said that during the depression the government provide (relief) work to a lot of artists, just what (sort 这个词总容易与thought混淆) of works (did) they do?& M( J* c& o! s) j$ o
W:It depended on the kind of artists you talking about. A lot of painters did work for government buildings, (murals 壁画), and city halls or other pubilc buildings for example. Sculptors did work to put in the public park, that sort of things.
" v: w$ k: a; @$ a/ X: T, RM: Didn't peopleget upset about the government spending so much money on art?0 j! }. U4 R9 k
W:There were some (criticisms 批判), sure. Many people consider the program wasreful. They thought that creating public art was not real work like (paving 铺) a road or putting up a building. But the government was concerned with getting as many people employed as possible.2 G% ]" ^& E- A' T3 Z
M:Could I ask about one more thing? I expected art (form) 1930's to be abstract, but what you show in the (slides 幻灯片) was pretty realistic.
3 \: X( ~% ]( n. b3 z( V+ BW:You maybe a little (mixed up 混淆) there. Abstract Expressionism, that's the main of American abstract school is usually associated with 1950.0 Q; [5 i# g& t9 a3 Z
M:Was there a (dominant 主要的) artistic style that (these) depression (era 时代) artists used?
1 E# i2 T$ m" o: jW: Let's look at a few more slides. Maybe that will show you. Also there was an exhibition in Washington a few years ago about this art, so I put a <catalog 目录> from the show on reserve (in) the library. If any of you want to see more examples of this work. Go over and take a look.
